In painting, my compositions are informed by a variety of physical matter, which includes photographic and cinematic imagery. My interest is not confined to any single source and may well include images conjured up in my imagination. Regardless of where I start however, the intention is always to move beyond the mere representation of physical matter. I am looking to connect with something that is far more elusive – and it seems, only ever arbitrarily available.
With photography, my images act as a footnotes to situations where I was once present in time. But I do not consider these images to be an objective account of any given instant, nor an accurate summary of my personal experience. With its great handicap for selective representation and ambiguous storytelling, photography intrigues me most for its specific appeal to the imagination.
