What do cave paintings, flash cards and Pop Art have in common? They all emphatically overstate their common object of reference as an end in itself. The subject matter overlaps precisely with the object of scrutiny and is therefore consumed directly by the masses, like a hypodermic injected straight into the blood stream.
This is not a new phenomenon in art, in fact it has been the main thrust of religious painting for centuries. Except there it was used to assert, not the everyday objects familiar to – and verified by physical experience, but instead extended into the world of the imagination, substantiating the spiritual dimension with equal conviction and clarity.
