With the exception of non-objective art, I make no real distinction between representational or abstract painting. In practise, I am dealing with real space and these elements are reconciled fluidly on a single stage. De Kooning is widely referred to as an abstract painter, and in relative terms this may be true, but in an absolute sense he was also a representational painter, because he painted figures, just like Rubens painted figures.
